Does your site provide appropriate orientation cues?

The actual terminology you use can significantly influence how well people can navigate. You must have links that clearly indicate where they lead (with effective information scent): and when people arrive at their destination, your site must provide appropriate orientation cues to indicate that the users have arrived where they expected to arrive.

Links and Labeling Systems
Work with a writer to design your link labels: getting this right is not as obvious as it may seem. Labels must communicate effectively, both in denotation and connotation, in meaning and feeling: they must be unambiguous, interesting, and appropriate to your overall corporate image.

If you decide to use icons for your links, make sure you label them with words as well – icons alone are rarely clear, especially for newcomers to your site.

Labeling systems are standards used to ensure consistency in vocabulary, style, and spelling. Labeling systems, for instance, will specify a controlled vocabulary, which establishes the preferred terminology that will be used throughout the site.

The controlled vocabulary helps ensure that you always choose the same word among two synonyms, for consistency.

Thus, it might resolve whether your products are called “Products” or “Offerings” or whether you refer to your customers as “Clients” or Customers. ” (When you design an index or a search engine, you have the opposite problem – that of enabling the synonyms, rather than restricting usage.)
