Usability evaluation: Patching Things Up

No Comments · Web Design Ethiopia

The most important step in any usability evaluation is to go back and fix the problems that were identified. Don’t just write up a report and leave it on the shelf – a usability evaluation must first identify the problems and then suggest practical solutions to improve the usability of the site.

A report that vaguely states that the navigation is confusing will be worthless. Instead, it needs to state specially how the navigation might be improved. Then the developers need to return to the code and fix the problem.

In some cases, fixing the problem will be simple, and in others it will take considerably more time than the testing itself. For this reason, when you are estimating the budget for usability evaluation, make sure you’ve included an ample budget for making the fixes.

After you’ve made the fixes, ideally you want to reevaluate the web site to verify that the fixes actually improved the usability. This type of testing, known as regression testing, applies to testing in general.

In principle, you should continue reevaluating and fixing problems until no major usability problems are identified. In practice, this is usually relatively quick for small, simple web sites.

For complex problems, you may only be able to afford to continue iterating until a minimal level of usability is achieved, and may have to postpone further improvements for a later version of the site.

When to Do Usability Evaluation
You can evaluate a web site through usability inspection, walkthroughs, or user testing at almost any point in the design cycle. In the optimal situation, you will evaluate the site periodically during development to verify that the design is staying on track.
